The most forgotten reason why your cat avoids her food bowl

Many cat owners can relate to this:
Your cat walks over to her food bowl, looks at it, sniffs… and turns away. Or she eats the kibble next to the bowl but won’t touch the rest.

What do you do then?
You think: she’s picky. You try a different food, a new flavor, you put it on a plate next to the bowl…
But often the real problem… isn’t the food. It’s the food bowl itself.

Whiskers aren’t just antennae; they’re highly sensitive sensors

Your cat’s whiskers are extremely sensitive. They help your cat navigate its surroundings, detect obstacles, and even locate prey.
But it’s precisely that sensitivity that makes whiskers dislike being pressed flat against the rim of a deep, narrow bowl.

“A deep bowl means constant overstimulation. It’s like having to eat every day with your head pressed against a wall.”

The three biggest mistakes we (unconsciously) make as cat owners

1. A bowl that’s too deep

With high sides that constantly push against the whiskers. Result: stress, frustration, or total refusal.

2. Food and water side by side

Cats prefer their water in a different spot than their food. This is instinctive behavior that dates back to their natural environment.

3. A busy or restless eating area

Cats are sensitive to stimuli. A spot next to a dishwasher, a high-traffic area, or near dogs can be enough to make them stop eating.

Why don’t so many owners know this?

Because nobody tells them.
When buying food or a food bowl, you rarely get any explanation about whiskers or eating comfort.

And let’s be honest: many food bowls are designed for mass production, not tailored to our cats.

The solution: a whisker friendly bowl

  • A wide and shallow shape: so the whiskers can remain free
  • No reflections or distracting edges: peace of mind for sensitive cats
  • Sturdy material: no noise or movement that triggers anxiety

At PINO, we developed the Whisker Friendly Bowl specifically for cats. Made from heavy, odorless PINO Sandstone®, with a shallow, wide shape.
